Structure Name: Chesterwood IV

Description:
 
Former bastle house to the southeast of Chesterwood green. Gables built of large pieces of rubble, with rebuilt side walls, doorways and window openings. 8.85 metres by 6.3 metres, with metre thick walls.

Legal Status: Listed Building Grade II, Scheduled Ancient Monument

Location: Chesterwood, NORTHUMBERLAND

Historical Background
 
One of five bastles which would have made up the early settlement of Chesterwood.
 

Chronology:

  • 1500 - 1650   Bastle constructed some time during the 16th century, or the early 17th century.
  • 1700 - 1900   Extensive rebuilding of all walls except the west gable during the 18th and 19th centuries.
