Structure Name: Lumley Castle

Description:
 
Castle incorporating the remains of an early medieval manor house and a 15th century chapel. The castle itself is roughly square, with four large buttressed rectangular corner towers, and is built around a square central courtyard accessed through a gatehouse and vaulted passage on the east side. The main ranges of the castle, now an hotel, are three storeys high, rising to four storeys in the corner towers, which are crenellated, and each have four octagonal corner turrets.

        Entities Involved:
              King Richard II: Granted license.
  • 1432   Construction of chapel on the first floor of the northeast tower.
        Entities Involved:
              Cardinal Thomas Langley: Authorised the construction of a chapel at Lumley.
  • 1570 - 1580   Minor alterations by John Lumley. Some windows replaced.
        Entities Involved:
              Lumley, John: Owner.
  • 1721   Minor alterations, including the library, by Vanbrugh. Some windows replaced.
        Entities Involved:
              Sir John Vanbrugh: Architect.
